The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (a Five-Point Plan)

    1) Provide shelter and care for homeless animals.
    2) Find new homes for those animals in need of re-homing.
    3) Educate the public on responsible pet ownership.
    4) Lower the number of unwanted animals in the community.
    5) Respond to, and assist with, investigation of cruelty and neglected animals.

    Our Vision
A safe and loving home for every adoptable animal and humane treatment for all.

    RCHS HISTORY

The organized humane treatment of animals in Rock County began as early as the mid 1930s. Concerned citizens from across the county joined forces and resources to purchase land on Arch street in Janesville to house unwanted and homeless pets.
This property, located almost at the center of the county, had good usable farm buildings that served as shelter for the increasing numbers of needy animals until 1976 when fundraising efforts allowed the construction of a real shelter.
During the late 1980s, this not-for-profit organization was approached by a number of municipalities to act as their stray holding facility. This increased the need for a larger facility and in the early 1990s, the 20-member Board of Directors addressed the need to modernize the existing shelter and add more cage space for the 3,000 animals seen yearly.
In 1996, building renovations and additions were completed, which included: An education room, two adoption rooms, a new heating and cooling fresh air system, improved drainage, and more cage space. The shelter can now hold approximately 175 plus animals comfortably.
Education and prevention are the focus now for this organization. RCHS averages about 100 adoptions each month, but the supply of available animals always seems to exceed demand. Therefore, efforts and resources are directed towards better care for the animals we currently care for, and prevention of unwanted births in the future.
The Rock County Humane Society, like many other shelters, is dependent upon the generous and constant support of animal lovers like you. By virtue of their time and financial support, this shelter continues to serve homeless and abused pets.
